Indy Eleven fall 1-2 to USL League One’s Lansing Ignite in the club’s fourth preseason friendly, bring the current record to 1W-1D-2L. A second half equalizer from Boys in Blue defender Macauley King wasn’t enough to keep the scoreline level as the club continues fine tuning ahead of the start of the 2019 USL Championship season.
“It was another good preseason game for us,” said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. “They [Lansing Ignited] showed a lot of hunger and focus. I think sometimes in these preseason games what we saw when we played Cincinnati, the team above, we were really up for it. Maybe today we’ve got to find that little bit extra and I think that will obviously come, but I think in the preseason games I would like to see a little bit more of that.”
Both sides pressed hard in the opening 20 minutes of play in an attempt to control the match early on. Lansing’s Kyle Carr took the first shot of the match near the edge of Indy’s 18-yard box, which ended just wide of the right post. Eleven forward Eugene Starikov followed up with two shots on frame, both saved by Ignite’s goalkeeper. In the 12th minute, Starikov forced a save after service from a trialist created the opportunity. Starikov’s second attempt occurred five minutes later after an up-field passing play between striking partner Thomas Enevoldsen and a trialist found the Ukrainian-American’s feet outside the visitor’s six-yard box, which forced another diving save for Ignite’s goaltender.
Lansing found the leading goal with a penalty kick in the 21st minute. The goal was converted by Ignite’s Steeve Selso after being brought down in Indy’s penalty box a minute prior.
Indy thought the score was leveled nine minutes after the start of the second half when a set piece play found the back of the net, but the goal was called offside and disallowed. Indy scored on a similar chance in the 68th minute after an in-swinging pass from the corner by midfielder Tyler Pasher found the head of King as he dove towards Lansing’s goal.
Lansing found the winning goal 10 minutes later on a nearly identical set piece play. A ball from the corner connected with another Ignite player’s head at the top of the six-yard box and flung into the back of Indy’s net, just out of goalkeeper Evan Newton’s reach.
“We look forward now,” Rennie said. “We’ve got another game on Saturday. It will be a different group of players that play in that game and we’ll see how we do.”
