Indy Eleven goalkeeper Evan Newton has been voted the USL Championship Player of the Week for Week 9 of the 2019 season. Newton etched his name in the USL Championship history books after back-to-back clean sheets last week against Tampa Bay Rowdies and North Carolina FC saw the veteran ‘keeper stand alone atop the league’s career regular-season shutout table, the 31-year-old netminder now with 41 to his name.
Newton’s Player of the Week nod is the second time one of the Boys in Blue have received the honor in recent weeks, this after forward Dane Kelly made headlines in Week 7.
Newton hadn’t faced a shot in over 135 minutes after the Rowdies failed to place a shot on frame last Wednesday and North Carolina FC was held at bay for the first half of Saturday’s fixture. Newton was forced into three diving saves to close out Saturday, including a double-save in the 52nd minute, to keep the back of his net empty for the third time in eight games out this season.
Newton received 47 percent of the poll conducted by a national panel of independent media representing every USL Championship market. Las Vegas Lights FC’s Irvin Parra finished second on 24 percent after recording one goal and two assists in his side’s 4-2 victory against Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday night.
2019 marks Newton’s sixth in the USL Championship and his first in Indianapolis, this after he made 20 starts down I-74 for FC Cincinnati last season. The Virginia Beach, Va. native finished the 2018 regular season with a 12W-2L-6D record, nine shutouts and a 0.80 GAA, the latter performance garnering him the coveted 2018 USL Championship Golden Glove award for having the lowest goals against average among qualifying goalkeepers.
Prior to getting back to league play in two weekends, Indy Eleven will enter the 106th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in a Second Round fixture next Wednesday, May 15. The Boys in Blue will host a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Butler University’s Sellick Bowl against the winner of tomorrow’s First Round match between Lansing Ignite and AFC Ann Arbor.
Indy Eleven will resume USL Championship action three days later next Saturday, May 18, when it welcomes the Charleston Battery on “Armed Forces Night” at Lucas Oil Stadium. D – Jordan Scarlett, New York Red Bulls II: Scarlett helped lock down a shutout for the Red Bulls II against Birmingham Legion FC, making seven interceptions, winning 6 of 7 duels and recording 10 recoveries.
D – Ken Tribbett, Nashville SC: Tribbett went a perfect 6 of 6 in duels and 4 of 4 in aerial duels while recording four clearances and two interceptions in Nashville’s shutout victory against ATL UTD 2.
M – Wilmer Cabrera Jr., Rio Grande Valley FC: Cabrera scored the opening goal, finished with two shots on goal and had one key pass as the Toros took victory on the road against the Portland Timbers 2.
M – Daniel Johnson, Birmingham Legion FC: Johnson performed well in both Legion FC’s outings, completing 67 of 76 passes and recording six interceptions and 17 recoveries as well as a standout goal against Memphis.
M – Kenardo Forbes, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC: Forbes had a goal and assist, completed 42 of 59 passes, made 12 recoveries and won 8 of 11 duels in the Hounds’ 2-2 draw with Charleston.
M – Chris Wehan, New Mexico United: Wehan struck twice in four minutes in the second half to send New Mexico to victory against San Antonio FC in front of 15,023 fans at Isotopes Park.
F – Jerome Kiesewetter, El Paso Locomotive FC: Kiesewetter’s notched his first two goals for El Paso and also completed 12 of 13 passes and won 4 of 5 duels in his side’s 2-0 road victory against Colorado Springs.
