Manuel Arteaga Registers Hat Trick & Assist in Victory

WESTFIELD, Ind. (Saturday, February 12, 2022) – Indy Eleven rounded out the collegiate portion of its preseason exhibition slate tonight by defeating the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds 4-2 in a 90-minute closed-door scrimmage at the Grand Park Event Center. Forward Manuel Arteaga made his 45 minutes on the evening count, as the Venezuelan striker player a part in all four of the Eleven’s goals during a first half scoring barrage for the Boys in Blue.
The match began with multiple offensive opportunities for UIndy, including two well-placed corners that went awry for the Greyhounds near the fifth minute. The first offensive chance for Indy Eleven came in the 8th minute from a shot on goal by defender Noah Powder. Shortly after in the 11th minute, the Eleven’s guest player in goal made a miraculous one-handed save off of an impressive strike from a UIndy midfielder to keep the match scoreless.
However, the Greyhounds would get on the board first in the 17th minute, as an Eleven turnover in midfield turned into a fast-break opportunity for UIndy that resulted in a sparkling 20-yard effort to move the scoreboard. However, Indy Eleven responded quickly, as Arteaga fired home from six yards out to even the score just a minute later. UIndy’s aggressive attack continued in the minutes that followed, including a 10-yard effort that bounced just wide of the goal in the 23rd minute.
From there it was all Eleven, the deadlock lasting until the 25th minute when Arteaga converted his third goal of the early preseason on a dish from forward Aris Briggs. Indy Eleven continued to push the pace, as the squad’s guest right midfielder converted on a give-and-go opportunity from Arteaga in the 32nd to push the lead to two goals. The Eleven attack continued through the end of the half, with Arteaga heading in a dead ball cross from the endline from Nicky Law in the 37th minute to secure himself a hat trick and a commanding 4-1 lead for his club into the break.
The offensive chances slowed down for both sides to start the second half, but the new look Eleven side for the second 45 minutes still generated opportunities primarily through set pieces. The score remained the same for nearly a half hour until the goal-scoring seal for the second half was broken in the 73rd minute, with UIndy converting on a 2-on-2 break to push their deficit to two goals.
Despite a few offensive chances generated from both sides in the final quarter hour, Indy Eleven’s 4-2 margin would hold, resulting in a second win this week when combined with its 7-0 victory over Marian University on Wednesday.
Tonight’s contest was the second of eight planned exhibition matches for Indiana’s Team this preseason, which will continue against new USL Championship rival Detroit City FC on Wednesday, Feb. 16, in a closed-door scrimmage at Grand Park.
