Loudoun United FC (1-7-2, 5 pts.) return to Segra Field to face Philadelphia Union II in their 11th match of the 2020 USL Championship season on Saturday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m. EST.
In their last match, the Red-and-White fell 2-1 to Hartford Athletic. Loudoun United started the match positively and found an early goal in the fourth minute to give them a 1-0 lead. Allexon Saravia played a lofted pass into Christian Sorto, who broke free from the Hartford defense and slotted it across goal to Josh Fawole for the first-time finish. It was Fawole’s first professional goal after signing with the Red-and-White in the offseason.
Hartford Athletic answered with a goal in the 17th minute with a goal from Arthur Rogers from a long-range shot from outside the box. Loudoun United continued their strong offensive play for the rest of the half with constant pressure being put on the Hartford defense by Alioune Ndour and Josh Fawole. They created chances with their speed on counterattacks and they nearly helped create a goal for Michael Gamble in the 14th minute, but his shot was saved at the near post by Hartford goalkeeper Parfait Mandanda. Despite the constant pressure on Hartford’s defense, the two teams went into halftime tied 1-1.
In the second half, the Red-and-White continued to press forward and create chances but were unable to find a second goal. Hartford Athletic broke the deadlock in the 76th minute when Gabriel Torres finished a header on the end of a cross from the right wing by Alex Lara. Timmy Mehl picked up his second yellow card of the match right at the end as Loudoun United were pushing forward for the equalizer and will now have to miss Loudoun United’s next match through suspension.
Loudoun United FC will look to continue their strong offensive play against Philadelphia Union II and add to their point tally in Group F on Saturday night. The top two teams from each group in the regular season will advance to the 2020 USL Championship Playoffs, producing a field of 16 teams overall in a regionalized single-elimination bracket. Group winners will be paired with Group runners-up in the Round of 16, with home-field advantage being determined by record for the remainder of the bracket.
The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ with coverage starting at 7:00 p.m. EST.
