You recently signed with Loudoun United ahead of the 2022 season and then in your debut game you start, win 1-0, and keep a clean sheet. How does it feel?
“It feels great. There’s a lot of belief within the group that we can do something special this year. We worked hard all preseason to build momentum going into the season. To see our hard work and preparation translate into winning our first game is exciting.”
You’d had quite the journey from debuting in 2018 with Chicago Fire as a Homegrown player then joining Inter Miami in their expansion season before making the move to Columbus Crew. Can you tell us about your professional experience so far?
“It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster. The last few years have been really disappointing for me personally and I feel like I have a lot to prove this year. I couldn’t be happier with my teammates here at Loudoun. We have a lot of guys who have big goals and are committed to the success of the team. We are a new team, but we’ve come together quickly, and we’ll only get better as we continue to play more with each other.”
With the constant shift of players between the Academy, Loudoun, and D.C. United, how has relationships on the field been growing?
“I’ve been really impressed with our approach here. We know we will have a different line up almost every week, but we are a team that has come together a bought into the same mentality. We don’t care who we have on the field. I’m confident in every single one of my teammates that when they get their named called, I know that we can count on them to perform.”
How has Fred Brillant influenced you and the backline?
“Fred has been great to work with. I’m really lucky to have him here to ask questions and to watch and learn from his approach to the game. He had an amazing career as a player and I’m learning a lot from him as a coach.”
How are you and the team preparing to face New York Red Bulls II on Saturday?
“We’re all really excited for this next game. Red Bulls are always a really strong team, and they like to play a direct style with lots of high pressing. We know the game is going to be a battle and the guys are excited to bring the fight Saturday in New York.”
What can we expect from Grant Lillard this season?
“You can expect someone who will defend with passion. I like to pass and combine out of the back. I like to be vocal and organize a high press. I will fight to win games. I love that everyone is doubting Loudoun this year. We are projected to come in last place again. We have a new team with a new mentality and I’m confident that we can win it all this year.”
