BEGINNING A NEW QUEST
The Miami FC enters Saturday’s match with the goal of bringing home yet another championship to Miami in an unown league for the club. Prior to joining the United Soccer League’s The Championship, Miami FC spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons in the National Premier Soccer League, winning back-to-back national championships. Most recently Miami FC played in National Independent Soccer Association, where they were crowned East Coast Champions after defeating Stumptown Athletic 3-0 on November 9, 2019
Miami FC’s preseason record was 2-1-1 (W-T-L), recording two wins against Soccer Soldiers and Orlando City B. The latter match was the club’s best offensive performance in preseason creating over ten chances throughout the match and dominating the USL League One side in the second half. The other two matches were against Major League Soccer opposition, suffering a tough defeat against Minnesota United (5-0) and then playing to a scoreless draw against New York City FC.
INVESTING IN THE ATTACK
In an active offseason which saw the club bring back 14 players from their 2019 squad, Miami FC also focused on securing top attacking talent. With one of the most successful goalscorers in USL joining the club, Romario Williams was announced on January 1, 2020. The proven forward was later joined by two of the most creative midfielders in the league, with the signings of Vincent Bezecourt and Sebastian Velasquez. Both Bezecourt and Velasquez have plenty of USL matches under their belts, as well as Major League Soccer experience.
NELSON VARGAS’ DEBUT
There will be a new head coach on the sideline for Miami FC in 2020 as former U.S. Senior International Nelson Vargas took the helm after the 2019 NISA season concluded. Vargas was the assistant to former Head Coach
Paul Dalglish, who now is the President & General Manager of the club.
Although born in Massachusetts, Vargas has strong local ties, having grown up in the Miami area and also featuring for MLS’ Miami Fusion from 1998-2000. This will be Vargas’ first professional head coaching job.
UP NEXT
Miami FC returns to Miami to make their home debut on next Friday, March 13 against in-state rivals Tampa Bay Rowdies. That match will take place at Riccardo Silva Stadium on the campus of Florida International University and will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
