The Miami FC added two new members to its coaching staff ahead of the 2022 USL Championship season. Goalkeeper Coach Giuseppe Weller is returning after being part of the club in 2021.
Meet head coach Anthony Pulis’ assistant coaches:
Max Rogers – Assistant Coach
Originally from Grantham, England, Rogers began his coaching career at St. Mirren FC in Scotland as an academy coach. There, he played a part in multiple roles, including coaching at different youth levels, playing a key role in the development of academy players and helping the senior team with opposition scout reports.
Rogers decided to take his talents across the pond in 2016 when he joined Orlando City SC’s academy. He led the development of the academy’s U17 team while helping other age groups until 2018.
In 2018, Rogers joined USL Championship side Saint Louis FC as an assistant coach to now Miami FC’s head coach Anthony Pulis. The two helped the St. Louligans to a Western Conference Quarter-Final in 2018, a US Open Cup Quarter-Final in 2019 and an Eastern Conference Semi-Final in 2020.
Rogers showed his ability to mold to an unexpected situation in 2021 when he assumed an interim head coach role three months into his arrival to Indy Eleven. After a year in Indiana, Rogers reunites with Pulis after a year away from each other. The two last worked together at Saint Louis FC in 2020.
“Max is a coach I’ve known for a number of years,” said Pulis. “He’s really detailed, really knowledgeable, a great human being, enthusiastic and wants to get better. He compliments with me very well, so I’m really pleased that we’ve managed to get him to join.”
Ryan Thamm – Head of Performance/Assistant Coach
Soccer performance specialist Ryan Thamm arrives in Miami with ten years of experience in performance analytics and fitness coaching.
The Big Lake, Alaska, native had a four-year stint in Salt Lake City, Utah, working with Real Salt Lake and Real Monarchs. There, he was the Monarch’s strength and conditioning coach and the head of performance analytics for RSL.
The 33-year-old returns to the Sunshine State, having worked with Orlando City SC and affiliate club Orlando City B as a fitness coach in 2017. During his time in Orlando, Thamm met Rogers.
Thamm also has experience with the Portland Timber, Oregon State University men’s soccer team and Swansea City AFC. At Swansea, he was a first-team performance analyst intern while completing his master’s in performance coaching at the University of South Wales.
“Ryan is a younger coach who is very driven and determined to be the best that he can be,” said Pulis. “He is very knowledgeable in his field. He will be our head of performance but will also act as an assistant as well.”
Giuseppe Weller – Goalkeeper Coach
Giuseppe Weller is a licensed FIFA goalkeeper coach with over 14 years of experience in the sport.
Originally from Vicenza, Italy, Weller began coaching in South Florida in 2007 with local youth soccer teams. Since then, he has coached at the college and professional levels, including stints at Nova Southeastern University, St. Thomas university and the Miami FC.
While coaching, Weller expanded his repertoire by completing advanced coaching licenses. He has professional goalkeepers, international goalkeepers and US Soccer Federation licenses under his belt.
He is the only returning technical staff member, having spent the 2018 and 2021 seasons with the club.
“I’ve heard really good things about Giuseppe as a person,” said Pulis. “He’s very humble, respectful and hard working. Goalkeepers love working with him and I think he will really work well with the staff that we have.”
