ALBUQUERQUE, NM (May 1, 2019) – Regarding fans who recently threw beer and trash at our opposing team at our recent match vs. Portland Timbers 2, New Mexico United unequivocally does not and will not tolerate this behavior at our matches.
Any fans caught throwing items on the field or using hateful, racist or homophobic language will be subject to arrest, immediately ejected and banned permanently from our games.
We understand that soccer is a sport followed by incredibly passionate fans, and we are blown away by the community support we’ve received and continue to receive. That said, our team mission is one of unity and positive change, and the actions taken by a handful of fans last Friday diametrically opposed that mission. We also understand that the majority of the 12,921 people at our match were not involved in this bad behavior, and those who choose to participate in these actions are not welcome to our games.
“New Mexico United is here to bring our state together. The entire soccer world is talking about New Mexico United, and I am asking all New Mexicans to hold each other accountable for our actions. If you see this behavior, we ask that you report it immediately,” said owner and CEO Peter Trevisani. “What we are creating here is not just changing New Mexico, but inspiring other communities around the world. Let’s show the world what New Mexicans can do.”
New Mexico United very much appreciates the Isotopes organization for allowing us to use their beautiful facilities, and we expect our fans to respect our shared stadium, the meticulously maintained grounds, our security and staff, our fans, and our opposing team.
We have an incredible opportunity to create our supporters’ culture from scratch, and we know New Mexicans are much better than the behavior displayed last Friday. Somos Unidos.
