(ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico) New Mexico United lost for the first time at home on Saturday evening. Sacramento Republic FC netted 3 goals, and despite numerous dangerous chances, United could not find one of their own.
Around the 30 minute mark Cameron Iwasa drew a penalty from United defender, Justin Schmidt, and tucked it into the bottom right corner. Two United halftime substitutions Santi Moar and Juan Guzman, injected the side with fresh energy, and the first few minutes had the visiting Republic FC on their heels. United winger Ken Akamatsu blasted an attempt of the right post, and Moar followed up with a stunning attempt of his own just two minutes later.
The referee called a total of 29 fouls in the match and the lack of flow clearly bothered the normally expansive United attack. In the 77th minute Republic FC’s Ray Sarri put a cross on the back post that defender Matthew Mahoney finished with his head, and in the 90th minute, a Drew Skundrich cut back found a trailing Cameron Iwasa who netted his second goal of the evening.
Up next for United is a fourth round Open Cup match with the MLS’ Colorado Rapids. The match will take place in Denver.
