During the first half, Oakland had the upper hand as their midfield controlled the majority of play and possession. Despite their dominance, Oakland Soul only had a few minor opportunities that didn’t pose a real threat to the Academica goalkeeper for the first half hour. Oakland Soul made an early attacking substitution bringing on Jordan Geis to change things up. In the 37th minute, a breakthrough occurred when Geis assisted Isabella Flocchini, resulting in a 1-0 lead for Soul. Shortly before halftime, Geis scored a goal herself, extending Oakland’s advantage to 2-0.
At the beginning of the second half, Oakland made two substitutions while maintaining their control over the game. They continued to press forward with possession. However, as the match progressed, the intensity increased, and the game became more physical. In the 77th minute, Academica received a red card, reducing their team to ten players. This gave Oakland Soul the numerical advantage for the final minutes of the game. Jordan Geis took advantage of the extra player for Soul scoring her brace in the 80th minute to make the lead 3-0 for Oakland. Nayeli Diaz and Eden Olson would score the fourth and fifth for Oakland late to make it a 5-0 win for Soul.
Oakland Soul now return home to Merritt College to host Pleasanton Rage on Sunday, June 18th with kickoff set for 2:00 PM PT.
