
IRVINE, Calif. (September 18, 2018) – After a hard-fought 1-0 win on Sunday over Fresno FC, Orange County SC returns to action at home tomorrow night against Real Monarchs SLC. Orange County will enter Wednesday in sole possession of first place in the USL Western Conference; unbeaten in three matches.
Fans at Championship Soccer Stadium tomorrow will be rooting for its home club to continue adding to what has already been a historic season, including breaking franchise records for wins and points, as well as eagerly counting down the minutes of another key USL match. Once the Swope Park Rangers vs. San Antonio FC contest reaches full-time on Wednesday, which should to occur shortly after kickoff in Irvine that evening, Orange County will officially earn its ticket to the USL Cup playoffs.
“This is going to be a great soccer game—two very good teams that both like to get the ball down and play,” said Orange County SC Head Coach Braeden Cloutier. “To add to it, both clubs are fighting for first place in the Conference. Wednesday night should be fantastic for our fans.”
Orange County’s opponent held the top position in the Western Conference for most of the season, until falling behind Orange County in recent weeks. Real Monarchs SLC currently sits third on the table. The Real Salt Lake affiliate most recently finished level with Saint Louis FC 1-1. Jose Hernandez scored the lone goal for SLC on an assist from midfielder Maikel Chang. The Cuban creator became the first player in USL history to record 30 career assists. Forward Chandler Hoffman leads the club with 11 goals on the campaign.
When Orange County and SLC met in May, the Monarchs finished on top 2-1 at Zions Bank Stadium. Chang scored the opener before Orange County midfielder Aodhan Quinn converted a penalty in first half stoppage time. With the match heading towards a draw, forward Juan Ignacio Mare scored in the 91st minute to secure the victory for SLC.
