
(July 28, 2018) — Phoenix Rising FC was unable to break Real Monarchs’ home unbeaten streak in a 4-1 loss to the Western Conference’s top club.
Rising had its chances early in the half. Forward Chris Cortez took a chance from the top of the box in the 14th minute but his shot was off target. In the 27th minute, forward Billy Forbes sent his shot from the middle of the penalty area over the crossbar.
The Monarchs’ Sebastian Velazquez scored the match’s first goal in the 37th minute when he received a pass at the top of the box and then fired a left-footed strike into the top left corner of the net.
Moments later the Monarchs were up 2-0 after Phoenix Rising defender Mike da Fonte deflected a shot into his own net in the 42nd minute.
The two-goal deficit became more daunting in the 62nd minute after midfielder Gladson Awako was shown a straight red card. Three minutes later in the 65th minute, the Monarchs’ Chandler Hoffman made it 3-0 for the home club.
Phoenix Rising got back to within two goals again in the 76th minute when an Alessandro Riggi cross was deflected into the net by a Monarchs defender but the Monarchs’ Andrew Brody added another insurance goal in the 84th minute to make it 4-1.
Phoenix Rising gets back on the road next Sunday, August 5, to take on Portland Timbers 2. That match will kickoff at 2 p.m.
