Rising FC (7-7-5) has a chance to go unbeaten on its road trip when the club heads to Orange County, after a 2-0 win over LA Galaxy II and a 1-1 draw at Rio Grande Valley FC.
Friday night will be a critical match in the Western Conference playoff race as well. While both Phoenix Rising and Orange County (7-6-7) enter the match outside of the conference’s top eight, the teams are both within three points of Oklahoma Energy FC for the final postseason spot.
Orange County, with 28 points, trail Energy FC by just one point while Rising FC is three back. Both teams have games in hand on OKC, however. Rising FC’s 19 games played is currently the fewest of any USL team.
Orange County limps into Friday’s match, with the team going winless in their last five games. Offensive woes have not helped OC’s cause of late; during this five-match winless run, the club has scored just two goals.
Defensively, Orange County has done enough to draw three times in the last five, including a shutout against Tulsa Roughnecks FC in their most recent game to preserve a 0-0 draw. OC Goalkeeper Charlie Lyon has started every USL match for the team this year, collecting a clean sheet on five occasions.
Phoenix Rising meanwhile have suffered a couple of heartbreaking results recently. On July 29, the team lost to San Antonio FC on a late penalty kick. Last week, the club couldn’t hold onto a 1-0 lead after having two players sent off, as Rio Grande Valley scored in stoppage time to deny Rising FC the win.
Last time the two teams met, however, it was Phoenix Rising inflicting a late blow, when Didier Drogba scored on a stoppage time free kick to earn his club a 1-1 draw. After this week’s contest, the Western Conference rivals will face off one last time on September 6 in Arizona.
The all-time series between Rising FC and Orange County has been tight, with Phoenix possessing a 6-4-2 lead in the previous 12 meetings.
