Racing Louisville midfielder Savannah DeMelo previewed Saturday’s home contest against Bay FC and discussed where the team is at this point in the campaign.
The 26-year-old has tallied six goal involvements in 11 starts in lavender this season, one away from tying her single season career-high. DeMelo, who became the first Racing player to score in three consecutive home matches on June 7 against the Houston Dash, is one of four players across the league with at least five goals in less than 12 games played.
“It’s the first time we’re playing Bay,” said DeMelo. “It’s a really exciting opportunity. They’ve been doing really well so far this year. I think they have a lot of great players and a great coaching staff, so I’m excited to play them.”
The Louisvillians are just three points behind sixth-place North Carolina Courage with two games left prior to an extended break. Racing is 2-2-1 in its last five games, recording the sixth highest point total in the NWSL during that stretch.
“I think we’re just getting better and better,” said DeMelo. “It’s the middle of the season, but we still have a lot more to achieve and I think the girls are ready. We’re always learning. I think we’re a really young team still. It’s Bev’s first year as head coach but I think we’ve done tremendously well.”
