Racing Louisville forward Kayla Fischer previewed Friday’s rematch against the North Carolina Courage in the first-ever NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup and how her second year at the club has gone so far.
Fischer started on the right wing in the first meeting at North Carolina just 18 days ago.
“I think it is a good opportunity,” said Fischer. “Obviously, we didn’t finish that game the way we wanted going on a week break. So, I think it’s cool that we get to play them two weeks later.”
In Racing’s first win of the Summer Cup, Fischer scored just two minutes after coming onto the pitch as a halftime substitute, intelligently finding the corner after receiving a line-breaking pass from DeMelo. It was Fischer’s second goal in a cup competition, with the first coming last year against the Houston Dash in the Challenge Cup.
The Ohio native joined Louisville last year through the 2023 NWSL Draft. She then signed a two-year contract with the club a little over two months after being selected. So far in her sophomore campaign, Fischer has made double the amount of starts compared to her rookie season. She is third on Racing in tackles plus interceptions and second in successful take-on attempts behind Emma Sears.
“It’s definitely a completely different club this year from last year,” Fischer said. “I’ve had to develop my role into more of where they need me to play. I’ve tried to make [switching positions] something that I can bring into my game and just be useful wherever I’m needed.”
