MADISON, Wis. — The Richmond Kickers (6-7-7) fought hard away from home in the second Henny Derby of the season against Forward Madison (6-4-9). The Reds led the match in total shots, possession percentage and duels won, but, despite their surging attack and debut from new signing Denso Ulysse, the Reds fell 1-0.
The referee’s whistle kicked off the important midtable clash and both teams started out with high energy and sharp movement. Richmond pressed the ball hard in the Madison defensive third for the first several minutes before a loose ball picked up by Ethan Bryant initiated a rapid counterattack within the first 15 minutes of the match.
Bryant passed the ball from the edge of the Richmond box to Jonathan Bolanos, freeing him up to run at defenders on the left wing. Bolanos nutmegged one Madison defender, then took a spacious dribble across the edge, opening up a huge space at the edge of the box before laying a subtle pass off to Matt Bolduc, who caught the pass in stride and put his laces through a well-drilled shot that Madison’s Phil Breno parried out for a corner kick.
The Reds continued to apply pressure to every touch and pass received by the Madison players as the two teams worked at finding the edge that changed the scoreline in their favor. In the 26th minute, Forward Madison earned a free kick outside of the corner of Richmond’s box which sailed close to the far post before Akira Fitzgerald gave it a punch out for a corner kick to deny an early goal.
Near the 32nd minute, Zaca Moran pinged a brilliant diagonal pass into Madison’s defensive third, reaching Bolduc just outside of the box. Bolduc dribbled into the box and passed to Bolanos who feigned a dribble inside then cut outside and beat his defender before slotting in a shot with his left-foot across the goal towards the near post, but the shot rolled wide of the goal.
Five minutes before the first half would come to a draw, Forward Madison ripped a shot at the goal but Fitzgerald leaped off his line to keep the scoreline level. With two minutes of added time in the half, Nil Vinyals stepped up to take a long free kick which he sent into the center of the Madison box. Emiliano Terzaghi found himself head and shoulders above the Madison defense and flicked a header backward at goal, but Breno was there to knock the ball out and the first half came to a close shortly after.
The second half would provide an early advantage for the hosts. In the 50th minute, Madison’s Jake Keegan dribbled at the Richmond defense, cutting inside and swinging a pass into Ryan Sierakowski at the other end of the box. The Madson loanee fired the ball into the back of the net taking the Mingo’s up 1-0.
Several minutes later, Bryant dribbled directly at the Madison defense before letting loose a powerful shot that Breno fumbled. Terzaghi was quick to attack the rebound and get a quick stab to try and knock the ball into the back of the net, but the attempt went wide of the post.
In the 70th minute, Richmond’s newest signing, Denso Ulysse made his first appearance for the Reds, along with Oalex Anderson, to bring in fresh legs as Richmond pushed for the equalizer they needed to get back into the game.
Around the 78th minute, Anderson ripped a great shot at the Madison goal but once again Breno was there to get a touch to it and knock it out of bounds. With time running out for the Reds, an additional four minutes of stoppage time would give them a few more opportunities in the final minutes. However, despite Richmond’s valiant efforts, multitude of shots and chances created, the Reds were on the wrong end of what is consistently one of the most evenly-contested rivalries in all of USL League One.
Richmond’s next match will be against New England Revolution II for the fourth and final matchup of the 2021 regular season. Richmond had previously beaten New England Revs II twice earlier in the season before finishing with a draw last month at City Stadium. This time, Richmond will travel to Gillette Stadium to face the MLS-affiliate on Friday, September 17th. Kickoff for the match is set for 7:00 p.m.
