PITTSBURGH (April 18, 2024) — Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC was handed an all-USL Championship matchup for their entry into the 109th Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, as the Hounds will host FC Tulsa in the Round of 32 at Highmark Stadium.
The matchup was announced this afternoon by U.S. Soccer, which conducted the draw for the next two rounds. The winner of the Hounds-Tulsa matchup will go on the road in the Round of 16 to face the winner between Sporting Kansas City of MLS and Union Omaha of USL League One.
The Round of 32 match against Tulsa will be played at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7 at Highmark Stadium. Riverhounds season ticket holders will receive information this week about how to get their tickets for the match, and tickets for the game will go on sale to the general public early next week.
The Hounds are coming off a historic run in the Open Cup in 2023, when they knocked off a pair of MLS opponents — the New England Revolution and MLS champion Columbus Crew — on their way to reaching the quarterfinals for only the second time in club history and claiming the prize as the USL team to advance the farthest in the competition. They entered this year’s tournament in the Round of 32 (Fourth Round) based on their finish in last year’s USL Championship standings.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer competition in the United States, crowning U.S. Soccer’s national champion across all divisions, both professional and amateur. This will be the 20th time the Hounds have competed in the Open Cup, reaching the quarterfinals in both 2001 and 2023 and posting an 8-4 record in the tournament since 2018 under head coach Bob Lilley.
