SACRAMENTO, Calif. (March 28, 2016) – Sacramento Republic FC announced the additions of Kevin Goldthwaite and Dustin Cleaver to their football department. Goldthwaite was named vice president of football administration while Cleaver will take over as team administrator. The hires continue the club’s investment during its journey towards Major League Soccer.
“To have two individuals of such exemplary experience and character join our club says volumes not just for Republic FC but also for Sacramento,” said President Warren Smith. “Kevin is an example and mentor to our youth that a hometown kid can not only go on to play in MLS, but come back and build a career in the sport. Dustin brings us a wealth of knowledge that is invaluable as we prepare for MLS. ”
Goldthwaite joins Republic FC full time after serving the last two years as the color commentator on Republic FC broadcasts. He played seven seasons in MLS appearing in over 90 matches as a member of the San Jose Earthquakes, Houston Dynamo, Toronto FC, New York Red Bulls and Portland Timbers. Goldthwaite graduated from Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento and played with San Juan Soccer Club before playing four years at the University of Notre Dame.
In his new role, he will oversee the administrative needs of the football department in addition to serving as a liaison between the club and league. He will continue to serve as the color commentator for Republic FC broadcasts in addition to his new position.
Cleaver comes to Republic FC after spending the last three years as the director of soccer operations with the San Jose Earthquakes. Cleaver has over 10 years of experience in professional sports including time with the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS), LA Galaxy (MLS) and the Ventura County Fusion (PDL). In his new role with Sacramento Republic FC, Cleaver will oversee the scheduling and budgeting of travel accommodations, serve as visiting team liaison as well as assist with all administrative needs.
The club also announced the promotion of Jesse Saenz to head of sports science and the hiring of Hugo Guzman to lead the newly formed U-12/U-13 Republic FC Academy teams.
Jesse Saenz, the team’s chiropractor, assumed the new title of head of sports science. Under this new role, Saenz will implement peak performance and injury prevention strategies. This includes nutritional consultations, dietary planning, hydration testing as well as managing and analyzing the PlayerTek GPS Performance Tracking system.
“Jesse’s new role is a great support to the style we want to play,” said Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “We want to play high tempo football and to do that we need the players in peak condition. Just one example of how Jesse has elevated our technology is the implementation of PlayerTek based on his experience at Hull City A.F.C.”
The Sacramento Republic FC Academy hired Hugo Guzman to lead its U-12 and U-13 Academy teams. Guzman previously served as assistant technical director at Metropolitan Oval Academy in addition to previous roles at the New York Red Bulls. Guzman is fluent in English and Spanish.
“I am delighted to add Hugo to our Academy staff, added Buckle. “He is someone that has a trained eye with the younger age groups. I’ve seen first hand, during the time I worked with him in New York, that he has a talent for developing players and his experience will be vital as we build our U12/U13 program.”
