SACRAMENTO, Calif. (April 6, 2016) – U.S. Soccer announced the matchups for the First and Second Rounds of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Sacramento Republic FC will host a Second Round match on Wednesday, May 18 at Bonney Field.
The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the world’s third-longest-running open soccer tournament. Entering it’s 103rd year of competition, this year’s U.S. Open Cup will feature a record 92 teams participating in the tiered-bracket and single-game knockout tournament.
Republic FC will enter the tournament in the Second Round along with 16 U.S.-based USL teams. Unlike last season, MLS owned and operated USL teams will not be competing in the tournament. Republic FC’s Second Round match will be against the winner of the San Francisco City FC (PDL) vs CD Aguiluchos USA (NPSL) First Round match. The match will be played on May 11 at the Beach Chalet Soccer Fields in San Francisco, Calif.
Last year, Sacramento Republic FC advanced to the Fourth Round of the U.S. Open Cup by defeating Sonoma County Sol (NPSL) 4-2 on May 20, 2015 and Chula Vista FC (SoCal Premier League) 7-3 on May 27, 2015, but were knocked out of contention after suffering a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout defeat in the Fourth Round to the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) on June 16, 2015.
The winning team of the U.S. Open Cup will receive a berth in the CONCACAF Champions’ Leaguefor the next season, have their name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy and receive a cash prize. Sporting Kansas City (MLS) are the defending Cup champions.
Single match ticket information for Republic FC’s Second Round match on Wednesday, May 18, will be released at a later date. This match is included in all Republic FC season ticket packages.
