RENO, Nev. (June 29, 2019) — Sacramento Republic FC’s three-game unbeaten run in league play came to an end on Saturday night as the club fell 2-0 on the road to Reno 1868 FC.
Sacramento’s regional rivals had a handful of decent scoring opportunities in the first 20 minutes of play, but Republic FC’s backline initially held off the danger.
That was until the 35th minute when Reno’s Duke Lacroix stormed into Sacramento’s defensive half and played a delicate pass into the box that pinballed off a Republic FC defender and directly to the foot of 1868 FC midfielder Raul Mendiola who buried a left-footed shot from point blank to give his side a 1-0 advantage.
Reno doubled their lead in the 60th minute when midfielder Sam Gleadle flicked a soft pass over to Sergio Rivas who barreled into the box and with his second touch, chipped a cheeky shot over the shoulder of goalkeeper Josh Cohen that ultimately solidified all three points for the hosts.
Next up for SRFC is a home match against another regional rival, Fresno FC, on Wednesday, July 3. Kickoff for the Highway 99 Derby is set for 8 p.m. PT at Papa Murphy’s Park.
