Today, Republic FC announced it will host a second-round matchup for the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Thursday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. The Boys in Old Glory Red will host the winner of the March 23rd matchup featuring Portland Timbers U23 and Contra Costa FC. Tickets for the match will go on sale today at 2:00 p.m. at SacRepublicFC.com/Tickets.
Republic FC enters the tournament for the seventh time with an overall record of 13 wins and six losses. The Indomitable Club has reached the Round of 16 twice after defeating Major League Soccer sides Real Salt Lake in 2017 and Seattle Sounders FC in 2018.
Sacramento will face off against the winner of Portland Timbers U23 and Contra Costa FC, who are set to compete in the First Round on March 23 in Salem, Oregon. USL League 2 side Portland Timbers U23 qualified for the tournament after winning the NW Division Championship and the Western Conference Championship in 2021. National Premier Soccer League side Contra Costa FC enters the tournament for the first time in club history after a dramatic win in penalty shootouts during the qualifying round.
The 107th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup – U.S. Soccer’s National Championship – will kick off in March following a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament has crowned a champion every year since 1914, except for 2020 and 2021. The oldest ongoing domestic soccer competition is a single-game, knockout tournament that is open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The winner of the 2022 U.S. Open Cup will receive $300,000 in prize money, a berth in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League and have its name engraved on one of the oldest nationally-contested trophies in American sports.
