San Antonio FC goalkeeper Matt Cardone was named the USL Player of the Week, the league announced today. Cardone made seven saves including a penalty kick stop en route to his third shutout of the season at Saint Louis on Saturday.
Cardone received 47 percent of the poll conducted by a national panel of independent media representing every USL market. Ruben Luna of Rio Grande Valley FC finished second with 40 percent.
“It’s great to be named the USL Player of the Week,” said Cardone. “It feels good to be part of a vital team win on the road as we push for the playoffs.”
Cardone’s heroics earned him SWBC Man of the Match honors against Saint Louis as he led the team to three crucial points against another Western Conference playoff contender. Over the course of the game, Saint Louis recorded 12 shots, seven of which were on target and all saved by Cardone.
The San Antonio native becomes the first San Antonio FC player in club history to be named the USL Player of the Week. SAFC has had eight players earn Team of the Week (TOW) honors and six players named to the Team of the Week bench, including Cardone who earned his spot there on Aug. 23.
Filling in for starter and captain Josh Ford this season, Cardone has made seven starts, collecting four wins, making 28 saves and conceding 10 goals. Cardone’s three clean sheets and two penalty kick saves lead the team in 2016.
