San Antonio FC (14-2-10) will travel to face Swope Park Rangers (13-7-6) at Swope Soccer Village on Sunday. The match will mark the third and final time the two clubs meet in the regular season as both aim to remain in the top four in the Western Conference standings.
SAFC heads into the match after earning a 1-0 win at Orange County SC en route to clinching the club’s first-ever USL playoff berth thanks to a 55th minute goal from defender Ben Newnam off a free kick. The goal marked the Alamo City club’s fourth consecutive to come from a set-piece after failing to score from set-pieces in their first 23 matches.
Despite earning their place in the USL playoffs, the Silver and Black still has much to play for as the team aims to climb to the top of the Western Conference table. SAFC currently trails league-leaders Real Monarchs by just four points, and will look to build on their five-game unbeaten streak as the Monarchs look to get back in winning form.
Swope Park Rangers will aim to earn three points at home after falling 1-2 to Orange County SC last Saturday. SPR is currently in fourth place in the standings, just four-points away from third-place Reno 1868 FC but leading fifth-place Tulsa Roughnecks FC by just five. The club has won only one of their five last matches.
SPR may enter the match on Sunday without their leading scorer this season after forward Kharlton Belmar signed with Sporting Kansas City, the club’s MLS affiliate. Belmar has tallied 10 goals in 24 USL appearances. SPR midfielder Kevin Oliveira also signed with Sporting Kansas City after tallying three goals in 15 appearances for Swope.
SAFC and SPR will meet for the third time this season after playing two consecutive matches against each other on May 26 and June 3. SAFC earned a 1-0 win on the road in the first matchup prior to the two clubs playing to a 0-0 draw at Toyota Field in their second encounter.
The match will mark the final of four consecutive away matches for San Antonio FC. The team is currently 2-0-1 in their away stint, and will return to Toyota Field on Saturday, September 23 as they host South Texas rival RGV FC.
