San Antonio FC (14-3-10) fell to Swope Park Rangers (14-7-6) 2-5 at Swope Soccer Village to conclude the club’s four-match road trip.
“First and foremost, Swope Park Rangers played very well today,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “Our guys will look at the tape from today and learn from that experience and prepare ourselves for next weekend. It’s been a few games on the road now so it will be exciting to get back to our home field.”
SPR opened the scoring just 11 minutes into the match after the referee awarded the hosts a penalty kick following a foul inside the SAFC box. Forward Nansel Selbol then converted from the spot for the lead.
San Antonio FC equalized just nine minutes later when midfielder Billy Forbes collected the ball from a throw-in and found midfielder Omar Gordon on the far post with a cross. Gordon settled the ball and buried it past goalkeeper Adrian Zendejas to level the score 1-1. The hosts then regained the lead in the 45th minute after midfielder Felipe Hernandez scored off a direct free kick just before halftime.
The goal marked Gordon’s first for the club in just six appearances, and marked Billy Forbes' sixth assist of the season. Forbes’ five assists currently rank second all-time for SAFC after Carlos Alvarez tallied seven during the 2016 season.
Swope Park Rangers then added three goals in the second half, two of which came in the span of three minutes from Selbol and Kharlton Belmar, and another in the 80th minute from Max Rugova before Forbes pulled one back for the hosts to score his eighth goal of the season. Midfielder Connor Presley tallied his first assist for the club to set up the goal.
The match marked the biggest loss for SAFC this season and the first time the club has conceded more than two goals in a single match in 2017.
San Antonio FC will return to action on Saturday, September 23 as they host Rio Grande Valley FC at Toyota Field. The night will mark Military Appreciation Night presented by Toyota.
