San Antonio FC will play their first-ever playoff match this Saturday, October 21, hosting the Tulsa Roughnecks at Toyota Field in a USL Cup Playoff Quarterfinal. The match will kick-off at 7:30 p.m. against a Roughnecks team who will also be featuring in their first playoff game.
SAFC enters the 2017 USL Playoffs on the back of two straight wins to finish the regular season. The club defeated Portland Timbers 2 and RGV FC in back-to-back home matches to wrap up the number two seed in the USL Western Conference and a home playoff match in the conference quarterfinals. San Antonio forward Ever Guzman has emerged as a threat at the right time, scoring four goals and adding one assist in the club’s last three games entering Saturday’s clash with Tulsa.
The Roughnecks come into Saturday’s match losing three of their final four regular season games, however Tulsa has proven to be one of the better teams in the Western Conference this season just a year removed from finishing last in the league in 2016. Backed by leading-scorer Ian Svantesson and midfield maestro Juan Pablo Caffa, Tulsa established themselves as one of the more dangerous attacking teams, especially from set pieces.
While San Antonio has dominated the regular season meetings between these two clubs over the last two years, the Roughnecks have the advantage in elimination matches. Tulsa eliminated SAFC in the third round of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup on penalty kicks after the two sides played to a 0-0 scoreline over 120 minutes of play. Roughnecks goalkeeper Fabian Cerda put on an impressive display in the match to help his club move on to the fourth round.
In USL play, SAFC has defeated Tulsa in all five matches since the start of the 2016 season with the Alamo City club outscoring the Roughnecks 12-3 in those matches. San Antonio goalkeeper Diego Restrepo has recorded six saves against the Roughnecks this year while midfielder Kris Tyrpak scored his first brace for the club when these two sides last met at Toyota Field in June.
Should San Antonio FC defeat Tulsa and advance, the club would host a Conference Semifinal match at Toyota Field the following week, playing the winner of OKC Energy FC and Reno 1868 FC who also play this Saturday.
