San Antonio FC (3-3-5) fell to Reno 1868 FC (4-3-5) 1-2 at Greater Nevada Field on Saturday night. A goal from midfielder Omar Gordon and an impressive performance from goalkeeper Diego Restrepo were not enough to earn the club points on the road.
“Coming away from home is always tough,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We would’ve liked to do better tonight, but the team worked hard and fought all the way through, and the effort from the players was evident. We just need to learn to capitalize on our chances.”
Reno opened the scoring in the 39th minute when midfielder Jerry van Ewijk found the end of a through-ball and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Diego Restrepo for the 1-0 lead.
SAFC found the equalizer in the 47th minute just after the halftime break when midfielder Omar Gordon sent in a cross from a corner kick that snuck its way past goalkeeper Marcinkowski to level the score 1-1.
The goal marked Gordon’s second in USL play this season and third since joining the club in August 2017. The Jamaican also added a goal and an assist to his 2018 tally in U.S. Open Cup play on May 16 at Midland-Odessa Sockers FC.
Reno then found the game-winning goal in the 61st minute when forward Mohamed Thiaw capitalized off a rebound inside the SAFC box and headed the ball into an open net for the 2-1 lead.
San Antonio FC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo recorded five saves on the night, marking the third time this season that the Venezuela native has recorded at least five saves in a single match. Restrepo now ranks third in the USL for most saves (35).
The match marks the end of a five-game unbeaten run for SAFC. The club’s previous loss came on April 14 at the hands of Orange County SC.
The Alamo City club will return to USL action on Saturday, June 2 as they host Portland Timbers 2 at Toyota Field, presented by Texas Lottery. The club will then return to U.S. Open Cup play on Wednesday, June 6 as they host FC Dallas (MLS).
