San Antonio FC (7-5-7) beat Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (8-11-4) 1-0 on Wednesday night at Toyota Field. A goal from forward Kyle Murphy earned the Alamo City club three points at home for the second time in the span of four days.
“I thought tonight the character of our players, their attitude, application and work rate were very good,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We made some changes from our match over the weekend and I think that shows the depth of the locker room within this group.”
SAFC scored the lone goal of the match in the 55th minute when defender Darnell King received the ball on the right flank from teammate Maxi Rodriguez and sent in a cross to the center of the box. Murphy connected with a header and placed the ball far-post past goalkeeper Steward Ceus for the 1-0 lead. The goal marks Murphy’s first for the club in his sixth USL appearance since joining the team on May 10. The assist also marks King’s team-leading fifth of the season.
San Antonio native Matthew Cardone recorded his first clean sheet of the season in just his second appearance in 2018. The shutout marks the keeper’s eighth overall in his three seasons with SAFC, and the fifth for the club this season.
The win comes after the Alamo City club previously earned a 4-2 win against league-leaders Real Monarchs SLC last Saturday at Toyota Field. San Antonio FC will return to USL action on the road in just three days as they visit OKC Energy FC on Saturday, July 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the clubs’ second matchup of the season.
