San Antonio FC (9-6-7) will face Portland Timbers 2 (11-10-3) at Providence Park on Wednesday, August 15 at 9:30 p.m. CT. The match marks the second between the two clubs this season, as well as the second match in the span of four days for the Alamo City club.
SAFC will look to earn three points in Portland after narrowly falling 2-3 at Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Saturday, ending the team’s four-game winning streak, which marked the second-longest in franchise history. SAFC has yet to lose back-to-back matches in 2018, going 3-0-2 following a USL regular season loss this year.
SAFC is 3-0-1 all-time against the Timbers 2, most recently earning a stoppage-time 2-1 comeback win at Toyota Field in June thanks to late goals by midfielder Omar Gordon and forward Alex Bruce. Last season, SAFC secured a home seed in the 2017 USL Playoffs with a 1-0 win against the club. The last time SAFC visited the Timbers 2, the Alamo City club earned a 4-0 win.
San Antonio FC is 1-0-1 this season when playing on Wednesdays and is 5-1-3 on Wednesdays since the start of the 2016 season. The club is also 1-1-2 when playing on three days’ rest in 2018 after compiling a 4-2-3 record in the same matches over the last two seasons.
The Timbers 2 will look to earn a win at home after beating Swope Park Rangers 2-0 on the road on Saturday. Portland is currently in sixth place in the Western Conference standings, just two points ahead of San Antonio FC.
“Portland is a good team that’s in the playoff picture right now,” SAFC defender Greg Cochrane said. “Any time you play an MLS 2 team it’s difficult to tell who is going to be in the lineup, so there’s a little bit of a question mark on that. But regardless of that, they’ve shown that they’re a team to be reckoned with, so it’s a game that we have to take very seriously. They’re tough to beat at home, so we’re going to have to take it to them.”
Following the match in Portland, SAFC will travel to face Phoenix Rising FC on Wednesday, August 22. Including the match against the Timbers 2, SAFC will play seven of its next nine matches away from home. The club will return to Toyota Field on Saturday, August 25 as they host Swope Park Rangers at 7:30 p.m.
