Quotes:
Head Coach Alen Marcina
(On the win…)
“I felt we did more than enough to get the three points, I felt we were the better team tonight. But, incredibly proud of my guys. Had to overcome so much adversity, and challenges. Not just heading into tonight, but then guys playing out of position, needing to make some adjustments on the fly as well. But we don’t miss a beat, the mentality of this team is impressive. And I’m proud of them for that.”
(On the defensive lineup…)
“You know we had to play a number of guys who’ve never played in the back – Kimarni [Smith] had to go in late as a left wingback. We haven’t played him there this year, you had Connor [Maloney] first time playing centerback, played him there. Zico [Bailey], then we had to switch Shannon [Gomez] who’s coming off an injury. Then he’s going to the left and then coming to the right, PC had to start… that’s a lot of moves in the back. But we didn’t miss a beat, and that’s impressive. In my eyes, that’s highly impressive.
(On the pace of the match…)
“We thrive in chaos, we enjoy it. Again, the guys did very very well tonight. I think we were unfortunate not to get the three points, not to takeaway from Sacramento, they played well, but in the run of play we created big opportunities and were just unfortunate not to put one of those away.”
Goalkeeper Jordan Farr
(On the draw…)
“Alen Marcina said it … in the locker room with us. He said some pretty powerful things, to be fair. Like this group, mentality-wise, he actually said it was better this year than it was last year. And last year, we had a decent run at it. … He just was really encouraging about the boys’ mentality. We just don’t make excuses. You can tell it was two pretty tired teams, they played 130 or 120 minutes on Tuesday, or Wednesday. We had to rest everybody [Tuesday] but we still had what 12, 13 healthy guys. So yeah, it was a hell of a match from us. I’m really proud of the way we defended. Connor Maloney, when you talk about a leader, who’s willing to die and put his body on the line, once in the first half and once in the second half he’s literally just diving for balls. Blocking, he doesn’t care what he gets hit with. So when you have a leader like that, it permeates through the whole locker room. And so for me, it’s this type of result. I know we didn’t win, … but for me it’s a notch under the belt and kind of our mentality that … wow there’s something here that’s even more impressive than last year.”
(On next weekend’s Championship Final rematch…)
“Coach said it before the match – these are games you want to play in because of the intensity and the atmosphere, two top teams in the west … as far as a playoff atmosphere that’s what you want every game, and they brought it. We brought it. And it’s going to be the same. I mean Louisville, they don’t have short term memory. They know what happened in November, so it’s going to be a fight. It’s going to be fun.”
Defender Zico Bailey
(On the team’s game model principles…)
“Yeah yeah for sure, I think Alen does a great job of explaining what the game model is and what our plan is for each game. And it’s the same for each game, just it’s a different opponent. So like I said he prepares us very well, so if we have to move into a different spot that you’re well prepared.”
(On his versatility earning him minutes…)
“Yeah for sure, I think every player, they want to play every minute of every game. So if they don’t, I think there’s something wrong. But it definitely does help, knowing I’m going to play minutes.”
(On his assimilation to the team…)
“I feel like I’m fitting in very well, the group is very welcoming, everyone is treating me yeah like a brother. And it’s a big family here. So coaching staff, teammates, backroom staff they’ve all been very welcoming.”
