Briana Scurry, former goalkeeper for the US Women’s National Team and Gainbridge ambassador, visited Jacksonville this week to collaborate with Sporting JAX on a pair of events building up to the club’s kickoff later this month.
First was a free goalkeeper clinic at Veteran’s Park on Tuesday. Scurry was joined by Sporting JAX goalkeeper coach Mat Cosgriff and Sporting JAX Soccer Academy staff to help instruct over 100 aspiring keepers. It was an evening full of instruction and inspiration. She later noted how neat it was for her to see so many young goalkeepers all in one place, all hoping to reach her level in their future careers.
On Wednesday, Scurry attended the Sporting JAX Kickoff Business Luncheon presented by Ascension St. Vincent’s. Prior to the event, she met with fans and signed autographed copies of her book, My Greatest Save: The Brave, Barrier-Breaking Journey of a World Champion Goalkeeper.
There was no shortage of bling, either, as fans got to hold Scurry’s gold medal in a photo op with the star.
She highlighted the growth that women’s sports has recently experienced, encouraging business leaders to get involved in this burgeoning movemenr. This turning point has been palpable in American sports culture, and it can be seen right here on the First Coast.
As the first professional women’s sports team in Jacksonville history, Sporting JAX is in the position to do something very special. The club, combined with eight other Gainbridge Super League clubs, is ready to make waves in the sports world as it kicks off its inaugural season on Saturday, August 23 at UNF Hodges Stadium.
The luncheon served not only as an opportunity to hear from a legendary athlete, but it was also a chance for like-minded professionals and businesses to share their interest in the new team. These organizations see the vision that Scurry mentioned in her address, and don’t want to miss out on this herstoric moment.
Tickets are still available for Sporting JAX’s opening match on August 23 against DC Power FC. To secure your seat, visit sportingjax.com/tickets or call (904) 863-KICK.
