Colorado Springs, CO (July 20, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks drew 1-1 with Swope Park Rangers after a stoppage time equalizer by Alex Molano saw Swope Park go home with a point.
Coming off a win against Sacramento Republic on Saturday, the Switchbacks were in position to take first place in the Western Conference. The Switchbacks controlled the early portions of the match, but Swope Park was able to get back into it. The teams continued to battle and took a 0-0 draw into the break.
After struggling to finish their chances, the Switchbacks were finally able to get their break through in the 61st minute. Miguel Gonzalez was able to find Mike Seth in the box who slotted it home to give the Switchbacks a 1-0 lead.
The game began to get a little chippy as four players received yellow cards in the final 25 minutes of the match. The teams then had to play a minimum of six minutes of stoppage time, which would be enough for Swope Park to get their equalizer. Alex Molano would be the one to score for Swope Park following a free kick just outside the 18 yard box. The Switchbacks would only take one point at home to remain in third place (31 points), only 1 point behind Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 and La Galaxy II.
“Overall I thought we played well,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “But, it’s that same issue we’ve been having, giving up late goals. We need to be more aggressive and puts games away earlier.”
The Switchbacks will now travel to face St. Louis FC on Saturday, July 23rd at 6:30 MDT. The match can be seen live at switchbacks.fc.com
