After a tough fought match, the Switchbacks saw their 2017 US Open Cup run end at the hands of their bitter rivals, OKC Energy FC.
Energy FC took control of the match early on with most of their possession coming in the final third. Energy FC out-shot the Switchbacks 8-3 and earned 6 corners to the Switchbacks zero in the first half. Despite their best efforts, Dan Jackson came up with some critical saves along with the help of his backline, the two sides would enter the break scoreless.
The Switchbacks came out a little more aggressively in the second half getting in their fair share of shots. The teams would battle it out until Energy FC finally got the breakthrough in the 72nd minute. A defensive error led to Jose Barril curling a shot into the upper right corner into a spot Dan Jackson had no chance of saving. Energy FC would strike back in the 83rd as Wojciech Wojcik worked the backline and beat Dan Jackson on the one-on-one opportunity. Kevaughn Frater would earn a penalty just before the end of the 90 minutes. Jordan Burt put it away, but it wasn't enough as the Switchbacks fell 1-2 to their rivals and saw their Open Cup run end in the third round.
"We weren't good enough tonight and lacked the energy we needed to win," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "Now we've got to rebound and get ready for Saturday."
The Switchbacks will return to league play Saturday, June 3rd at Weidner Field against Energy FC at 6:00 P.M for Galactic Night. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a light-up saber courtesy of Penrose-St. Francis Pediatric ER. Fans are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite characters in the galaxy!
