After a tough defeat to Energy FC in the Open Cup on Wednesday, the Switchbacks defeated Energy FC on Rony Argueta's stoppage time goal.
After losing to their bitter rivals earlier in the week, the Switchbacks were looking to rebound against Energy FC for Galactic Night. The first half was a defensive struggle between the two sides with both keepers making big time saves. Moise Pouaty made a save of the week nominee in the 22nd with a diving one-handed save to his right. Energy FC would continue to get shots off but Pouaty would stand firm and the two sides would head into the half scoreless.
The second half provided a very similar game as the first, with neither side looking like they would break down. Both teams would have a handful of chances but neither were able to capitalize on any of them. Energy FC nearly took the lead late in the match as the ball bounced around in the box but eventually it was cleared away. Finally, in the third of three minutes of stoppage time, Jack Jones laid off a pass to Rony Argueta who fired it to Cody Laurendi's left and gave the Switchbacks a 1-0 win on the last kick of the match. The shutout also gave Moise Pouaty his third clean sheet of the season.
"It was a good win tonight," said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. "To win in that type of fashion is good for our confidence going forward. We still have a lot of things to work on, but we'll take the three points, especially at home."
"We struggled a bit, and they had a handful of good opportunities to put us away," said Captain Rony Argueta. "Moise came up big for us tonight coming up with some big time saves. Thankfully the team held it together to get the three points. We're hoping this lifts the team spirit and becomes a turning point for us."
The Switchbacks will now head to California to take on LA Galaxy II on June 10th before getting a much needed weekend off the following weekend. The Switchbacks return to Weidner Field on June 24th against San Antonio FC. Fans attendance will be treated to a post-match fireworks show! Kickoff is at 7:00 PM, tickets start at just $12 and are available here.
