STATESBORO, Ga. – June 8, 2024 – South Georgia Tormenta FC has signed 22-year-old Sam Jones, a former goalkeeper for the Tormenta FC Academy and Tormenta FC 2 pre-professional team. Jones has signed a one-year contract with a club option for 2025.
Jones signs with the USL League One roster while serving as the Tormenta FC Academy’s Director of Goalkeeping and USL W League goalkeeping coach.
“I am very excited to be joining Tormenta FC. I am honored to have developed in the academy and now have the chance to represent the first team,” Jones said. I want to thank Darin, Netra, and all the coaches and teammates I have worked with throughout my years with the club.”
Jones has experience in the USL ecosystem, having played for New Jersey Copa FC in the summer of 2022 and Tormenta FC 2 in the summer of 2021. Jones was a member of the 2021 team that reached the South Central Division conference final.
The Savannah, Georgia native spent his collegiate career at Winthrop University, where he made 31 appearances. During his time with the Eagles, Jones started 30 matches and 120 saves.
Jones’ strongest season came in 2021, following his summer season with Tormenta FC 2. He started in 12 matches for the Eagles and made 40 saves on his way to keeping three clean sheets.
“Sam has been integral in many areas of our club. He’s left a coaching impact at the youth and amateur level, adding value to whatever team he’s been exposed to. That trend has been mirrored on the playing side,” Head Coach Ian Cameron said. “He’s performed well in our youth ranks and in our USL2 structure. Now, he’s elevated his performances at the pro level to a place where we must make him available for selection. That’s become apparent over the course of the past year. Now we have an extra tool at our disposal to achieve our goals, with the extra pride of knowing our own coaches have collaborated with the hard work Sam puts in every day to get his game to a pro caliber.”
