Greenville, SC. (Sunday, Oct. 18, 2020) – Los Búhos took back second place eliminating three out of 11 teams from the runnings for the USL1 championship.
With Greenville heading into the game with 32 points, Los Búhos knew that they needed to make the most of their possession time, closing the match with 35% possession against Greenville’s 65% possession. They made fast breaks after recovering the ball in defense territory allowing them to take 6 shots on target with Christian Molina scoring the first goal of the match in the 19th minute giving Los Búhos confidence in this game.
With Greenville leading the league for most goals scored beyond the 60th minute, Los Búhos knew that they also had to keep an aggressive and consistent defense, keeping more spread out in the open field and attacking when the ball was in the Omaha territory. Los Búhos received 2 yellow cards with 1 for Greenville in the first half of the match. In the 36th minute, Greenville’s Noah Pilato tied the game scoring his third goal of the season with a one-hit shot and assist from Omar Mohamed.
Leading into the second half, Greenville didn’t hesitate to take advantage of their offense taking a shot on goal 4 minutes into the half. In the 66th minute Evan Conway made his fifth and game-winning goal of the season for Omaha by bending the ball into the left corner of the goal after Panzani Ferretty Sosa saved the ball and was able to make a pass to Ethan Vanacore-Decker for the assist.
Two yellow cards were received in the second half of the match each being received by both teams. Greenville pushed their offense not wanting to give Los Búhos the chance of having confidence, possibly leading them into chances for the championship. With Elma Nfor injured in the 88th minute, Greenville tried to take advantage of Los Búhos 10 man defense. In the final 99th minute of the game, Greenville’s Alex Morrell took a shot directly from outside the Omaha goal with Rashid Nuhu diving to save the game with seconds left of the match. Los Búhos need to win their next game against 10th ranked Fort Lauderdale CF with enough points to keep their second place standing and head to the USL1 championship.
