Roots came to Sacramento looking to test themselves against new Northern California rivals for the first time. After going down a goal inside the 20 minutes, Roots fought back as Chuy Enriquez leveled in the 26th minute throwing up the “O” in his post-goal celebration. Roots then took the lead when the 19-year-old, Ariel Mbumba from the South Bay, fired a rocket for his first professional goal as the road side headed into the half with a 2-1 lead.
The second half started on the back foot for Oakland, as Sacramento found their equalizer in the 60th minute through Sacramento’s Cameron Iwasa. Roots once again took the lead through substitute Jeremy Bokila but were unable to hold the lead for more than two minutes as Sacramento tied the match at three all. Late chances fell to both sides in stoppage time but both sides were forced to settle with the draw.

Head Coach Jordan Ferrell on Roots three goals
“We have the capacity to score good goals. Creating three goals and some other chances, that’s not going to win you games on its own. So it’s good to see us getting on the score sheet but overall it’s not good enough.”
On how to stop giving up cheap goals
“We have a new group and they have to come together. Not just on how good they can be, but also how to win games getting turned over in certain moments. We got to start making smarter decisions to turn these into three points.”
Player Chuy Enriquez on his first goal
“I can’t even explain how I feel scoring my first goal for Roots to be honest. My Family was here, a hard year last year, I couldn't even celebrate. I just went down on my knees and tears started coming down my face. After a year like last year, I can’t explain it. I just want to say, thanks to the people of Oakland and the Bay Area for welcoming me. Thanks to the club, Oakland Roots for welcoming me. It’s a tough tie cause you know that we had the opportunities to finish this game, but this is the game you win some, you lose some, and you tie some. Now it’s just time to get back home and work hard and keep going forward from here.”
