Oakland Roots Latest: Oakland Roots return to Laney for the first time in 147 days. The last time Oakland was at home was for the regular season finale in which they earned the final USL Championship playoff berth via a 1-0 win over Sporting KC II. This time Oakland will host USL Championship newcomers from just down the Pacific Coast in the form of Monterey Bay FC in the inaugural meeting between the two sides.
Oakland Roots are coming off a second consecutive defeat to start the season as Roots lost away to Memphis 901 FC by a score of 2-1 on Saturday. This was following a season opening loss on the road at Rio Grande Valley by a score of 1-0. Roots first goal of the year did come this past weekend as Darek Formella, found the consolation goal for Oakland Roots late in the game.
About Monterey: Monterey Bay FC just like Oakland are in search of their first win of the season coming off back to back losses of their own. Monterey dropped their opening game away to Phoenix Rising 4-2 and lost last week on the road to Colorado Springs Switchbacks by a score of 1-0. Monterey features former Oakland Roots center back Kai Greene who was transferred to Monterey from Oakland in January as well as former Project 51O attacker Walmer Martinez. The side from the Central Coast is coached by former two time MLS Cup Champion Frank Yallop.
