Write Your Roots Campaign is a movement led by Chapter 510 to support writing as an act of liberation.
Every year in the month of April (National Poetry Month), Chapter 510, one of Roots’ Purpose Partners, organizes the “Write Your Roots” campaign in partnership with the City of Oakland and Oakland Roots. Write Your Roots is an annual all-Town Epic poetry project where the Oakland Community can write a collaborative poem together on themes of Narrative, Embodiment, Lineage and Power.
This year, Write Your Roots poem is on the theme of EMBODIMENT. The poetic opportunity to love yourself, your body and show us what love looks like inside of you.
During the month of April, Chapter 510 will share the curriculum with schools and educators in their classrooms. Oakland Roots staff and players will be participating in the poem by sharing what embodiments mean to them.
Write Your Roots will culminate the last Friday of April, on Oakland- city proclaimed Write Your Roots Day with celebration of the Grand Opening of the Chapter 510’s youth writing center, where Oakland Roots players will be present to welcome the empowerment that comes through writing.
