Oakland Roots have announced the signing of Project 51O goalkeeper, Timothy Syrel. Syrel had previously been part of the first team under an Academy Contract signed in May of last season. Hailing from San Jose, California, Syrel is a 19-year-old who joined Project 51O for the USL League Two Season in 2022. During his time with Roots he made a significant contribution by stepping in off the bench in an emergency and helping secure a 1-0 victory against LA Galaxy II.
“Tim has been around the first team in training for over a year now and has shown high potential in our set up,” said Head Coach Noah Delgado. “He has proven himself everyday in our environment that he is someone we can rely on if called upon.”
Syrel had initially been on track for college, but he chose a different path. He returned to Oakland during the preseason with the goal of securing a professional contract. Throughout the spring season, Syrel showcased his skills by starting for Project 51O in both UPSL and USL League Two matches. A product of De Anza Force and Leigh High School in the South Bay, this San Jose native’s journey has come full circle.
Congratulations, Tim.
