Match Preview:
Oakland Roots SC will look to clinch a playoff spot on Saturday evening when they host El Paso Locomotive FC in the biggest game of the year.
The situation is simple for Oakland. Win and they’re in. Roots simply must win this weekend’s game, but that is much easier said than done. Head Coach Noah Delgado and his team have suffered from subpar home form this season, having won only 4 of their 16 home games to date. Their last home victory came back in July against Western Conference bottom dwellers Las Vegas Lights FC.
Roots SC’s opponents in this decisive match are El Paso Locomotive FC, who currently sit 8th in the West on 44 points, but with Roots on 42 points, a loss at Pioneer Stadium would see the Oaklanders jump them in the standings. El Paso’s season would be over if they lose, so the stakes are just as high for them as they are for Roots. Similarly to Oakland, El Paso have struggled mightily at home this season, with both clubs only picking up 19 points in home matches, but have played very well on the road. The Texan club have earned 25 points on their travels this season, which is joint-6th in the entire league. Both teams enter Saturday’s game on the back of disappointing losses on the road. Despite taking an early lead, Oakland Roots fell to a 4-2 defeat in San Diego, while El Paso were subject to a 4-0 battering at the hands of Memphis 901 FC. In the one prior meeting between these two teams this season, Oakland collected a 3-1 win in Texas, which will give Roots fans some confidence heading into this make-or-break contest.
With simply everything on the line, Saturday’s game will be full of intensity, passion, and competitiveness. The whole year has built up to this, and the expected sell-out crowd in Hayward will be treated to a spectacle to remember. Oakland Roots SC will also be celebrating their final regular season game with “Fam Appreciation Night”, presented by UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. Limited tickets remain, so grab them while you can! This will be a night you won’t want to miss.
